This is an incredibly wide open question. Unfortunately, your preference will only come with experience. I have a 661 Pressure Suit that I LOVE in the trees. I don't ride trees very often but I love the extra protection it offers as I tend to "brush" against them sometimes.:
For the MX track I prefer my 661 Defender. It has a mesh/web sort of shoulder support that spreads the impact out over your entire shoulder when you go down hard. You know how everything goes into slow-motion when you know you are crashing hard? Well, I have been quite certain that I was about to break my collar bone a couple of times as I was going down. So far I have come out of it with everything intact. I think it is due to the impact being spread out over my entire shoulder rather than focused on the impact point. That's just my opinion but if you saw the crashes you would be surprised that nothing was broken. FWIW.
BTW, I bought both at www.cyclegear.com

I wear an EVS revolution 4 for grand prix racing, it fits under my jersey & is comfortable with the camelbak. The front has a small lexan plate & the spine is also protected with lexan
For MX I wear the EVS flux, this is by far the most comfortable chest protector I have ever owned. It has pivoting points so it moves with you instead of sliding all over. I stays in place in the event of a crash.

I have a troy lee. The shoulder caps are removable so it fits under my jersey. It fits really well and is good quality lexan.

I've got a 661 defender as well and it has done the job well. It's fairly comfortable and I got it pretty reasonably priced. I would be interested in the evs flux that Tracy wears though, I like the idea of the pivoting points.

2 year 661 pressure suit wearer here! I got lucky and found a year old model and paid only 100 bucks for it. With some searching I bet you could find a similar deal. After wearing it for 2 years, I just cannot get on my bike without it. I've worn several of my friends chest protectors before, could never really adjust them to fit me, they always moved around and felt extremely annoying to have something flopping around on you all the time.
