I know MANY MANY people are afraid to check their valves for proper adjustment. I put it off for a very very long time. It took all of about 20 - 30 minutes total. Real easy, no parts bought (because mine were ok). The manual explains it and it's plain as day.... line up a few lines... slide a feeler gauge in.... if your good then your good. if your bad then it's a good thing you caught it early enough !!!

No offense to anyone here but I figured it wasn't really worth the time to put it together. -Kevin-

It really is an easy job, and it's a great reminder to those that haven't done it. Sure make the bike run better when they are in spec.

I checked mine on the YFZ when I did the cam mod a couple years ago. They were perfect back then. I suppose I should check them again soon though I only ride the it about 5-7 times/year....

I have been told over and over by shops that Yamaha valve were is non existent and they would be very suprised if you ever found your yamaha valves out of spec. Although I am debating going red for my next bike, still not sure, I do love my yami

I have checked the valve clearances on my 06 yammies both a 250 and 450 for the past 18 months every 25 hours, as the bikes are raced every weekend and get rode nearly every day. Those clearances have not changed since i first bought those bikes.

It's always best to buy a Hot Cams shim kit right off the bat so if your valves do need adjusting you don't have to order any. Plus there have been times when I put in the shim that would technically put it back into the spec that I wanted but it didn't put it exactly where I wanted for whatever reason, so I just grabbed the next size and measured again. The shim kit is a Godsend when it comes time to reshim.
