Broken Femur

Yesterday a buddy and Me went and rode at a track we built, and we were racing around like we usually do and we got tangled up together, I went one way and he went the other way and ran into a tree in 3rd gear about half throttle, his leg made contact with the handle bars and he cleanly broke his femur and displaced it almost 2 inches. He is having a rod placed in the middle of the bone to hold it in place this morning. He said he'll never give up on riding though.

Wow, that's a tough deal. Sorry to hear about it. I hope you don't feel guilty. It's just part of riding/racing and it could have just as easily been you. We all take our lumps. I'm also glad to hear he'll keep on riding! Here's to a quick recovery!

Thats a bad break, very very painful until it is set and stretched. I had the same rod installed in my femur. He will be up and walking within 2 days, not very good but it sure beats a cast. Tell him to keep exercising it and it will heal fast. I got 6 months off work because of mine, work related, but I went back to work in 4 months. I think I had to give up riding for about 8 months so my quad was only used for light trail riding before the 8 months were up. They take that rod back out after about 2 years and I think it was an outpatient operation. I broke mine about 10 years ago and it healed perfect, the only thing now is that it will ache when the weather changes from fall to winter. Tell him he can add the rod and pins to his trophy collection once they take it out.

Keep him motivated for a speedy recovery

Actually, those rods can be left in permanently and are left in there in a lot of cases.

They told me that to but the screws started to mess with the muscle by my knee. They told me it depended on age of the person and they said they take about 50% of them back out, this was 10 years ago though, so I'm sure they have made inprovments. I would still want it out though, just in case it ever broke again.

This is from Cyclenews.
Kellon is one of my heroes.

The following is a release from KTM -

Red Bull KTM U.S. Dakar Team Member, Kellon Walch sustained a broken leg in a pre-run incident yesterday near San Felipe, Mexico. Kellon was preparing for the upcoming SCORE San Felipe 250 where he was to team with Dakar teammates Andy Grider and Chris Blais.

Kellon crashed in a very remote area of the San Felipe course and had to wait 5 hours for the ambulance to arrive. Unfortunately, recent storms in Southern California and Mexico ruled out any chance for an air evacuation. After stabilizing the fracture, Kellon was driven to the border at Calexico where a waiting ambulance picked him up and took him to the nearest U.S. hospital in El Centro. Doctors at El Centro Regional Medical Center conducted further tests and determined Kellon had sustained a fracture of the left femur. He was scheduled to be airlifted to his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada where surgery would be performed under the guidance of U.S Dakar Team Doctor, Johnathan Edwards.

Scot Harden said, "Kellon's a tough kid, he went through quite an ordeal getting out of the desert. He's in good spirits and in good hands now. I'm sure he'll make a full recovery. KTM and the entire Dakar team are wishing Kellon all the best."
Chris Blais and Andy Grider will compete in the San Felipe 250 as a two-man team in Class 22.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later News is that Kellon had a rod installed in his femur and expects to be ready to ride in 6 weeks.
Blais and Grider won the San Felipe 250.

Re: Broken Femur

His doctor told him he should put a lot of weight on it for about 6 weeks, but thats still not that bad for a broken femur, and for not haveing a cast too. I broke my ankle casin a 60 ft double and had 2 screws place in, and I had a cast for 8 weeks and after that I still couldnt walk for another 2 weeks. But Im gonna surprise him when he gets back walkin around, There some stuff his bike needed and now ill get it done for him, and Ill set him up with a new pair of bars and fender, so when he is ready to ride again his bike will be like it never happend.
