Thanks for bringing this up DCox.
I would like to see the majority of the topics get back to the basics. I don't think we need to post completly off topic discussions to keep to keep members interested, the common interest we all have is that of offroad bikes.

For the last while I've been wondering if all we have left to talk about is
1)what is better 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
2)what bike should I get?
3)what bike is faster?

These same questions that have no answers keep coming up in a rather childlike form of question. I'm kinda of tired of the "my dad is stronger than your dad" theory.

I do however think the knowledge base on this forum is truly invaluable when it comes to asking for mechanical or technical help.

good post Darrel.

I appreciate everyone responding. My perceptions are not always correct, so I sometimes like to take a sounding just to get a sense of where others are at.

I personally do not see this as a free-speech or censorship issue at all. In a privately owned forum, the owner has the right to direct and restrict discussion to accomplish the mission and purpose of the forum. Even in the context of the public square, the 1st Amendment does not allow unqualified free speech (i.e., shouting "fire" in a theatre, or using inappropriate language in public). And while, yes, this particular thread is explicitly "off-topic," it is nonetheless infinitely on-topic in the very fact that it seeks to raise the question of getting us back on-topic (if that makes any sense).

I likewise admit that I have been off-topic in the past. I enjoy friendly banter with people of all ages here at ATM. And yes, I have been guilty of debating--sometimes for good reasons which were beneficial, as well as at times that were just plain stupid, and for which I feel embarrassed about to this day. But there are a couple people I have gotten to know well enough on ATM, whom I check in with from time to time to help give me perspective in the event that I feel I have stepped over some lines. That is the strength of trusting relationships in an online community.

In short, I wasn't necessarily trying to pick on anyone or any age group with this thread, because we can all be guilty of getting on our own bandwagon at any given time. But I honestly do value ATM for its original stated mission and what initially drew me to be a part of it. I learn a great deal from so many of you and I think so many of you also have a great deal of personality each in your own right. I do not like to think of one person as in a certain age group and another in another age group, etc. In fact, I have been amazed by how much I learn from some people that I later found out where very young indeed.

So in sum, I, like you, do not want to see the camaraderie we share divided by what age group we belong to, what bikes we ride, or from where we originate, etc. I learn alot from each of you and if we stay within the orbit of what the site is about, our unique differences can break through and benefit others--even be amusing--without dividiing or offending folks. This means that at times we may need to abstain from certain forms of communication that are not beneficial to the whole (welcome to society!). I will gladly commit myself to do just that, and accept correction from others if and when I stray.

Darrel...

I was wondering when you were going to further contribute to this thread.

I agree with everything you said, but most specifically, this:

So Darrel....keep me accountable.

vet, just thought i would say i LOVE your avatar. it makes me laugh everytime i see it.

I think it would be cool to have a forum where it was just like personal questions, ie; where to take a girl you like, but that way people that don't want to read that stuff just dont have to go there. Also i think topics like that are fun. maybe it's just bc i'm a kid, but it is fun to get off topic now and then, and just have some fun.

I agree, however either I missed it or the owner of this forum has yet to speak on this issue. Unless someone is speaking for him?

The example you used ("fire" in a theatre) is illegal for a very good reason. If you were to yell fire you would incite panic and someone could very well get hurt. I don't think someone talking about an off-topic subjec is likely to incite panic and my guess is the chances of someone getting hurt would be very remote to say the least. A stretch D-man.

Someone call the police! Friendly banter is strickly forbidden! This forum is meant to be a supplement to your owners manual, not a place for people of all ages to talk amicably. **note the sarcasm**

I try not to offend anyone, I think I succeed more then I fail, but sometimes I may cross the line and for that I appologize. I too have learned alot since joining this site and I believe the "orbit" of this site is friendship based on a common interest. As for the cost of maintaining this site, I know next to nothing about computers, but what about if you just deleted everything more then a year old? Pictures, post, polls, whatever?

Interesting topic Darrel, glad you raised the issue.

Heh, heh . . . you think you are going to lure me into a debate with the 'ol point/counterpoint presentation of my post.

I am tempted B.B., but I will pass--for now . . . .

The kids may need a place to go to ask such things. After all, girls are VERY VERY CONFUSING and the help of well known ATM Buddies could do the trick! :

You got it!

I promise that the next time a counterpoint to my position takes more than two sentences to deal with it I will respond! (I am sorry I couldn't resist--I am a fallen creature . . . . ).
