Unhappy Anyone lost anything off a trailer?

I picked up a hot water heater and while I was driving home it took flight from my trailer. It just exploded into pieces when it hit the road. I was just wondering if anything like this has happned to any of you? Share your story! Actually I feel like a pretty big arse as I thought it was too heavy to fly off. WRONG-O!!: Anyway, I was just glad it wasn't a bike or something expensive.

My ol' lady lost a down comforter when we were moving. Really sad story actually, this comforter meant the world to her and we did not notice that we lost it right away. We noticed it was gone when we got to the new house. Immediatly we started searching the ditch along the highway that we drove. Bad thing was, they had MOWED THE DITCH before we could get back to it. There was down all over the place. Must have been one heck of a lazy prick driving the mower... True story, scouts honor!

My friend had a blaster fall off his trailer, I car cought up to them about 5 miles later and told them it fell off, and rolled into a ditch. By the time they got back to it, it was gone. I found a deer stand in the middle of the road once.

I haven't lost anything of real value YET. Knock on wood!

The only item that escaped me was a tie down. We drove out to drop my bike off at my friend's house for riding the next day.

I undid the tie down from the bike and rolled it off. I dis-attached the right-hand side and put it into trailer, but in my haste forgot about the left hand side.

So, about 2kms down the road, on the way back home, I heard a small crash and look behind to find it had ripped off from being dragged along the road.

So now I have 1 and 1/4 tie downs!
Just have to use rope until I got to shop again!

Yep, I've lost my bike once...

About 3 months ago, we were pulling off the road to enter the track and hit a huge pot hole and my bike went... whooop out the trailer. It didn't hurt anything, but sure scared me. Fortunately, we were only going about 5 mph, or it could have been nasty.

I've heard too many stories to take a chance. I check, double check, and then check my trailer again before I head out.

That is one of the scariest feelings!

I wasn't going to own up to it, but since it has been said I can share my moment of near shock!

This happened about 4 weeks ago.
We had just picked my bike up from Yamaha dealer for new tube and ring. This is just after I had ripped and lost one of my good tie-downs. (Read above post for more detail on this) So I had to use one good and one old skinny flimsy tie down. WE were only going over to my dad's work and we could make it safer with rope from there.

On the way we went across a railway crossing. WE hit the bump slowly. But not slow enough! I heard a great crashing sound and my heart went into my mouth as I began to turn around and see no bike standing up! It wasn't until I fully sat-up and turned around to see my bike lying down hanging precariously over the side of our trailer! With that mum stopped the Navara and I went to inspect my bike. My worst fear was my new FMF silencer I had put on but not ridden with might have been damaged. Luckily it wasn't, however the right radiator was crumpled a bit. I doesn't leak and shouldn't hinder cooling.

It's hard to describe when I first heard the bang and crash.

We almost lost the same guys bike twice. Straps came off, lucky we had it tied on more than just the bars.

Railroad crossing ate my bike about 10 years ago, as well. I had the bike tied down to my trailer with a commercial wheel chock, but I also had a front wheel travel limiting device (dunno the real name) between the wheel and the fender, which made the tie-down a little less secure because the forks were not compressed. Well, it bit me when I went over a railroad crossing and one of the tie-downs got compressed and let loose. The bike went over the side of the trailer and onto the road...luckily, I wasn't going very fast - as I recall, it just bent the heck out of my pro-tapers and wrecked a lever.

From then on, I took out the travel limiting device and just lived with the possibility of compressing the fork springs over time. Never had another problem.

I never lost anything completly out of a trailer, now out of a truck bed...yeah I have lost all kinds of crap (building materials) out of a bed of a truck.

But I have had a few bikes fall on a trailer before, my 450 wasn't even 2 weeks old and I had a strap come loose and the bike fell over and the fork tube hit the edge of the open trailer and took a nice chip out of the leg, didn't dent it but enough to make me kinda mad considering the bike was new.

My Friends bike was leaning about halfway over the edge of the trailer when a tie down snapped. At the time, we were doing about 75 in heavy traffic. The end result would not have been pretty.

DOH!:

That would scare me to death I think! I lost a rear wheel, driving 70mph on the highway, that's right, the Whole wheel, rim, everything, it was the rear drivers side, it passed me up and kept going for a long ways, luckily everyone dodged it as it happened in the daytime. Had to have that one towed: . It tore up my brake shoes and bearings a bit, but all in all, it could have been worse. The main hub nut came off. Did not lose control of the car thank goodness.

Losing the whole trailer, I think you win Char.

Although I like the one where someone found a deer stand in the middle of the road. Pretty good. I doubt that would be the ideal spot to set one up for hunting though, unless you are hunting big game, like 18-wheelers, then it'd be aw-right.

I have personally never lost anything. However a contractor that my family has been friends with for about 20yrs had leased a brand new John Deer 510D backhoe and was returning it to the dealer. When he went under a railrod bridge that caught the top 4 inches of the boom and ripped it off the trailer at 60 mph. That basically totaled the 70k machine.
