This is why I support the NRA and the North American Hunting Club. Yes we need to be vocal, as they are, but be vigilant for their terrorist tactics. These people would as soon see a hunter or an off-roader killed as an animal be legally hunted. Thanks for the reminder and heads up. I will email Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited to put an alert out there. Bill

Personally, I hate trophy hunting, and stuff like bear trapping. Going and getting a deer, elk or duck etc. to put on the dinner table, right on, I'm all for it. But getting it so you can have a nice carpet or head on the wall? I'll pass. -Max.

max i am a strong hunter and what we kill we eat and then we show the animal its respect by putting a deer head on a wall or having a bear rug to show respect for the animals that we harvest.

It is interesting to see that some of you feel there is a type of hunting that is more "noble" than the other, thus making one "ok" and one not. I don't trophy hunt. Doesn't interest me. Many good hunters who have done more to enrich habitat and thus increase animal populations, do prefer it. Some of those take far fewer animals in a year than we, the meat hunters do. The legal ones, are not taking endangered animals (just like the legal trail riders are not hurting our cause for opening land to recreational uses), but are taking animals, legal to hunt animals, for their own preferred use. Now if you think that by siding with groups like the Humane Society, because you don't think a hunter should be able to bait black bear is wise, just remember, groups like that don't want you riding on land that can provide homes to those animals. YOU will be next on their list of sports that they want to make "EXTINCT". Just like it is not important why you ride, (just that you ride), it is not important why a hunter hunts. Want to talk about "roots" and heritage: For many it starts with that activity which has enabled man to survive since the beginning of time. A natural thing for any animal. Remember, they want to BAN all hunting. When hunting is shut down or slowed down, they will turn to other activities they feel are harmful to animals (they already have in many instances). Or do you really think they will just go home and get their snouts out of the trough they have been feeding from and abandon the hysteria industry that they have helped to create?

We also hunt mainly for the meat. There are also great organizations that you can donate your unwanted meat too (like Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry) that will provide food for needy people in your area. I personally hate that they say that bow hunting is barbaric entertainment. Bow hunting takes alot of skill and precision. Thanks for posting, I'll forward this to our AR hunting forum.

After reading your post all I have to say is...... I've been archery hunting for the last 27 years. I can't count how many times I've let animals walk away from me because the shot was not right (more then 40yds, brush in the way, not the correct angle for arrow placement, ect. ect) To me, I have far to much respect for the animal I'm hunting to risk anything but the best shot possiable. Having said that, I have no doubt that us archers are the easyest prey for the ANTI'S to target. We are lower in numbers then those who rifle hunt. HOWEVER, If archery hunting is stopped, that will only feed the anti's cause to go after any and all other hunting. Am I saying that everyone should get on the bandwagon to protect us archers? NO WAY. Just get on "A" bandwagon that will hault the anti's in their efforts. I'm off my soap box now. |

Oh, I'm not for banning any hunting, just don't think getting the hide of an animal and letting the meat rot is right. Only reason I haven't hunted is because I don't have rifle in a sufficient caliber, and the one I do(ak47) is illegal for hunting. That, and I don't have tags. -Max.

the only reason that i put this thread on the board is so i can let everyone know what the tree huggers out there are tryin to do. i didnt want to cause controversy between hunters and non hunters on this board. i just wanted to raise awarness. as for why they (meaning the antis) dont like bowhunting, they just dont realize how fast the bows are know a days. we arent all using sticks and strings like the indians. i dont know how many times ive seen a deer get hit and not even no it. i think if you put the time in bowhunting can even be better than hunting with a rifle or shotgun. as for the reason i hunt. its in my blood and i enjoy being in the woods hoping to see a deer. its not about me harvesting a animal its the comrodery that i get to have with my dad and my friends. its something that the anti hunters will never get to enjoy

Hunting should remain as it has been. I have grown up hunting and will continue to do so. Clayton hunts at our ranch... we do like the venison and the benefits of wild game hunting. Those guys need a few skunks under their house or in their neigborhood and they will start killing something. Hunters rights forever. All hunters should use good judgement in the taking of game. thanks - Tony Miller [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I know Andy, Boyd, and myself are probably the three most die-hard hunters here on ATM, and I don't have alot to add to what they said. Shoot,.. I took up dirtbikes and riding as something to do when hunting season is closed. I don't have a problem with HOW or WHAT a fellow hunter hunts as long as its LEGAL. I do have a problem with HSUS and PETA telling ME I can't hunt. Luckily the state of Georgia just passed a bill last fall that guarantees our right to hunt and fish here in our state, and no organization can ever take away that right.

I'm all for hunting, I just don't know where to begin learning? I have a few guns for target/skeet, I'm sure my 30.06 would do the job...I would love to take a deer and learn how to cut it properly and get all that awesome meat... I believe that hunting is a great way to keep the game population in check. If we didn't deer hunt, too many deer would reproduce, the population would run out of control and run out of food/spread disease and the deer would die much harsher deaths than a 30.06 round would do. Hippies smell anyway...

Oh ya... I forgot to say that I also put my deer "On The Wall". What better way to show total respect for the animal by making him a part of your home.

30-06 is quite possibly the ultimate 'north american' round. You can load it for varmint, or you can do the largest of game, with everything in between.. -Max.

yeah, I've heard that about the 30.06- the rounds are too expensive for target shooting so it usually just stays in the safe. Whats the first step to take twoards going deer hunting? Hunter Safety?

Yep, first thing is to pass the hunters safety course. Then of course ya have to go out an buy your license and tags (deer, turkey, etc.). idk about where you live but around here you can usually buy most of your tags for around $25.

I have enjoyed hunting and fishing longer than I have enjoyed riding. I own serveral rods/reels, small cal. rifles, shotguns, large rifles, muzzle loaders and a compound bow. I spend more hours preparing to hunt and hunting than I care to admit. I am sure that if the "Anti's" talk to any of us that hunt by the rules they will find we have a greater appreciation of the animals, and can tell you more about their habitat than they can. I too have spent hours watching deer below my stand bow hunting and NOT released an arrow for fear of a bad shot. Just my 2 cents.
