Question 250s....Do they still have a chance

Well I finally landed a good job, and as of now I am looking for a new bike. OK my question, do the 250s still have a remote chances against the "all mighty" 450s?. To make things worse, most of the tracks around here are all sandy or very soft soil with the occasional hard pack spots....I would much rather stick to a smoker then have to deal with valve maintenance, oil filter, and all that other fun stuff that come with the four strokes but if i had to id make the switch to the dark side...Its almost to the point now that if you wanna have a chance at racing you have to go 4 banger

Unfortunetly NO! The advatage that is given to the 4's makes it imposible for the 250's to have a chance. Now if they would give the 2's a few more cc's it would be fair. But they are dieing to get rid of the 2's and we aren't going to fight it so bye bye 2's.

We've come full circle. It won't be long before 2 strokes are completely gone all together. Eventually the 4 strokes will even take over FMX. Give it a few years.

Doubt it.
AMA just passed a law giving the 125 up to 144cc...

Of course they do. It's still the rider that makes the most difference. you'll still see 2strokes winning races all over the world. At the top level it will be what the manufacturer wants represented. Carmichael did pretty well the last couple of years on 2 strokes against 4's. There's no doubting that there is an advantage to riding a 450 against a 250 which you would expect with such a capacity difference. Even for slower riders they allow you to be that much Lazier and still make great progress.
Personally I've gone for a YZ250 because of easy maintenance, cheaper servicing and initial cost, less weight and it's awesome fun to ride and jump.
I've also seen the big bills even at club level when a fourstroke blows up.
The power of the new 2strks is really quite four stroke like too. If you fancy a smoker go for it, when you win it's that much more satisfying, if you lose use the fourstroke thing as an excuse...

Yep.

For alot of people 4-strokes may be easier to go faster on, and others prefer 2-stroke.

Any thumper can be beaten by any pinger. It all depends on the riders. Prime example of this is Bubba in the 125 class. The 125 2-stroke has a bigger disadvantage than a 250 2 and he carved up the rest on 250f's!

I think yes, remember that its 90% rider 10% bike.. the only place I could see that ten percent slowing someone is in pro-racing and thats all...I believe that today's 2 strokes are very competitive machines and in the hand of a good rider can keep up with 450s... you do have to work harder tough.

the only place the 4's are winning are in proffesinal racing .go to a local track and watch who's taking trophys this is a pipe dream that 4's are better i constantly meet people that say "i thought id be faster on a 4 stroke but there so heavy and wont start"you would be crazy to buy a bike that needs the top end broke down every 15 hours.its either racer x or moto cross action that had a article last month saying you should pull apart the top end every 10 HOURS on a 4 str.i think i will stick with my 50 hours on my 2 str.

i think the 250s are at less of an disadvantage to the 450s then the 125s are to the 250f's

you can be competitive, you've just got to have heart
