My girlfriend wants to learn to ride. She is about 5'5" 120lbs. She has no experience with bikes. She wants a 250 but I told her no. What is a tame bike she would be safe learning on, but would allow her to grow as a rider at the same time.

If you want to start her on a 2-stroke look at the KX100. I don't know how hard it hits or anything but she can grow into that where with an XR100R....before long she will be completly bored with it. |

I'm with MATTXR250r on this one. I'm only 160lbs and my hands hurt after a all day ride from holding on. The power is increasing in these newer bikes get something used, espically since shes only your girl friend, no offence man, just thinking ahead.

I hate to say it but why dont you get her a 4 stroke. Like a CRF250, smaller and a hell of a bike. Its a hell of a bike if she can handle the powder, Its all on the teacher also. If your not a good teacher find her a alot smaller bike. You dont want to get he hurt. PINGER4LIFE!

If she really wants a 2 stroke, get her a CR80, not a KX100. 80s make great chick bikes cause they are small enough to drag her feet, and powerful enough to keep up when she gets better. they also make a fun play bike for you! But honestly, I would get her a XR100. Its a much less intimidating beginner bike and will always be fun. I would also stay away from electric start cause that breaks the golden rule: "if u cant start it, u cant ride it!" Last edited by Roostman; 03-23-2004 at 09:40 AM.

If you are thinking 2 stroke, the KX100 is way,,way easier to ride than the 80's. I have had experience with two of them for novices and many 80's too. I would prefer the tt125 to that though,,but it is close,,,the kx has the better suspension and braking when that becomes important.

I'm thinking four stroke. The ttr125 was what I was thinking. She'll be around for the long haul. Its just not official yet.(I want to get her riding first)

My fiance is 5'4" and has an XR200. I had to adjust the rear shock for her to ride it comfortably, but she does awesome with it. This was also her first bike, and she picked up how to ride extremely fast. I dont know if you are looking for new or used, but you can find some good used ones for pretty cheap. If you do go the XR200 route, get one after 93, they are a little closer to the ground than the older models. If you are gonna go with new, the CRF150 I think would be the perfect size. We also have access to a KX80 which she rides from time to time, and I can say this, if you are trying to get her riding and she has never ridden before, stay away from 2 strokes. My fiance tried riding the 80 after she had learned how to ride on her 200 and still had a heck of a time with it. I say go with a 4 stroke, they are much easier to learn on.

My wife is about the same size as your girlfriend. She has a CRF230 and loves it. I did move the forks up in the triple clamp and inch and took most of the pre-load of the rear spring to allow her to flat foot it for now. As she get better I will readjust the suspension. The controllable power the four stroke is great for beginners, and the electric start is a huge plus for both of you (she wont have to bug you to start it, and you wont spend your life starting it). Trust me you WILL be her electric start if the bike doesn't have one :-)

| Having raised a daughter who has ridden and raced since her 4th Birthday, I take exception to the title,"1st bike for a girl". What difference does it make wether the rider is a guy or a gal? A first bike is just that...the first bike...what does the gender of the rider have to do with it? Will she be anymore of a newbie than you were the first time you rode? I know many girls that refuse to ride the womens class just so they can wupass on the guys. Don't mean to come across snotty here, but when it comes to female riders, they are just that...RIDERS, just like you and me! So don't think they have to ride a fufu bike cause they are girls, unless of course you don't want her learning so fast that you will be chasing her down the trails.
