They are SWEET! I had one before my YZF and loved it to death. Mine was a super clean 85, it only had 200 miles when I bought it and 1200 when I sold it. Mine was geared 14/52 I believe- I know the front was stock and the rear was +8 from stock. It went ANYWHERE you pointed it. I wish I still had mine. You will have a lot of fun with it for sure.

I paid $60.00 for it and a Suzuki 50cc mini. Both had been sitting for 4 years. The 200 needed carb clean, tank clean, lube everything, fork oil, water in oil, clutch stuck, ant bed in frame.chain rusty, sand down plastic..................ect.ect.. So after 5 hours of work and WD40 and oil and parts laying around the garage , she runs like a scalded ape and looks pretty good to boot!!!

My aunt had one..hauled her around all over the place. That bike was real popular with the nov and older desert racers of the 80's...reliable, not too much power, and got the job done. You should have allota fun with it!

I had one! Mine may have been an 85? Didn't have it long. It was my last bike "back in the day". I remember it handling and running well. All I did was BarkBusters and an Answer muffler. Sold it to a friend who won a ton of harescrambles with it. Fun bike if it's not roached out!

Just like Cowboyona said.. they are sweet. It is very capable in the tight technical stuff and at high speed. The engine has a very flat torque curve - strong in the low and mid-range. Probably has the most low-end grunt of any two-stroke. The grunt and the gearing make it real easy to ride slowly. I ride a friend's '86 (last year of manufacture and it has a front disc) in Phoenix whenever I go out there. He bought it new and has kept it in great shape (now he has an XR650 for longer rides around the desert). Both fast and slow speed handling is excellent. It makes even my riding look good - it's very forgiving of ham-fisted technique. And it handles the extremely technical desert rock-climbs with ease. Most of the time I can just leave it in first and use throttle only to climb the rocks. You rarely even have to put your foot down. Some people nicknamed them "the Water Moccasin" because they can get through deep water without dying. Deep in this case means up to the bottoms of the tank and seat, with the exhaust bubbling under the water. My friend has actually done that with it when he lived back east (hard to find that much water in AZ). Just make sure that the seal on the ignition wiring is good, especially where it goes into the crankcase. His wasn't and about a year after going through the water, his magneto rusted and the bike died on him. That is the only trouble he's had with the thing, otherwise it's been bulletproof. Great bike.. you should have a blast with it. Last edited by nanook67; 09-25-2003 at 03:17 PM.

| If you plan on keeping it for awhile - which I imagine you will, especially since you practically stole it If you can swing it, the mod would make a great bike even better. That '86 I ride has a great front brake - very easy to modulate and strong. I would think Yamaha might be able to order the parts for you, though I'd imagine it wouldn't be cheap. You may already know this, but they are really sensitive to running out of gas. When they run out, the engine will start to rev like crazy - bad. So when you hear that begin to happen, be ready to kill it. If this occurs while riding, it can be hard to hit the kill switch in a panic, so you might be better off just jamming on the rear brake while in gear and stopping it that way. | My brother bought one of these and it is a great trail bike. I can vouch for the high revving out of gas problem. My old DT400 had the same issue. By the way, does anyone know where to get parts for this bike. My Bro. needs a side number plate for the left side. |
