Default St. Jo Ride Report.

Let me start off by saying there are ZERO pics or vid of anyone hitting Joshua Tree. I know we were talking a lot of smack but plans changed fairly early in the day. The Duncan crew got there pretty early and I even got a little seat time in before the Texans arrived. Cell phone coverage out there is pretty much non-existent so I headed up to the gate after I got several minutes of hard riding in close to the pits. Sure enough, The big black 1-ton was there with all the bikes on the trailer. rbm33 and his daughter led them to where we were parked down by the river and we immediately went to work getting Char's radiator guards on. How crazy would it be to smack a tree and mess up your radiators when the guards were sitting back in the truck!

We got that project finalized and a few of us headed out for a short ride while they geared up. I was just a tad late and never caught up to the rest of the crew so I reversed and headed back to the pits. I saw Char running full speed and knew something was up. I climbed out of the river bed to see Keetoman lying beside his bike with his foot pointing the wrong way. I threw my bike down right beside him and it wasn't hard to tell we had a problem. We got him on the back of a quad and made the short trip to Char and Daniel's truck. Daniel and I set out with him for the nearest medical facility which was at Nocona. X-rays showed multiple fractures. It's called a tri-mileal break or something like that) That's the three uppermost bones in your ankle. Along with that, his fibula was broken. Tibia is fine. They set the bones and after about 3 hours there, they released him so we could get him headed back home to see the doc in Sherman. We ran back to the track and loaded up all their bikes in record time. Char and family headed back south with Keeto.
Since I had hardly ridden at all, my crew went out with me and we got a nice long ride in before we headed north. I talked to Char about an hour ago and they were headed back home. Keeto's family had arrived and the doc's are making decisions about what to do.
I heard tales about the ride they had while we were at the hospital but I'll let them tell about it. They had fun and don't think any of us thought it was a wasted trip. I'm just sorry my friend Keeto got hurt. However, it could have been any one of us. It's just the nature of the sport.
Oh yeah, after we got him loaded in the back seat I was trying to take his boot off. He and I both felt the bone separation but he wanted to keep going. I was getting weak in the knees but he was just gritting his teeth and told me to keep going. I felt two more cracks but we got his boot off. I got a couple of pics while Char was cutting his sock off. He's a tough hombre'!

Get well soon, my friend!
BTW, I have your thermos. Will bring it to GMBVI.

Keeto's out of surgery and has three extra screws in his body. He's in good spirits though and hopes to be home tomorrow.

As for the riding, it was a blast. We rode through what I would consider some pretty gnarly stuff. And yes, I did get stuck in the mud.

Man, what a trip... I didn't want to climb Joshua Tree so I took the manly way out an broke my leg Just got home and glad to be here. I'll try to get some copies of the x-rays. I think they took about 500 last night. They put a plate on my Fibula and then had to run two long screws through the plate and Fibula and screwedit into the Tibula to keep it from jumping back out of location. Those two will have to come back out in a few weeks but the plate will have to stay. Looks like I'l be out for about 8-9 weeks.

Thank you SO MUCH to the everyone that helped me!!! I feel so bad for ruining what was to be a fun filled day.

OK, off to another Vicodin trip - wish it was Demorol instead.

Char, you sure had a purty bike until you got it muddy It looks GREAT wih the redrad guards. You did good RBM!!

hey keeto

glad to see your up and around. the only person whos day got ruined was yours, you know what they say about a bad day riding is still better than a good day at work, but in your case that may not be quite true. lol

we made it to joshua tree 2 times and i rode up the backside and down the front both times, but i wussed out on riding up the front side.

LOL, so true my friend! It was great meeting you and the rest of the Duncan crew finally! Next time I'll try to ride more than 50 yards so we can hit Joshua Tree.

OH poor keeto... I am so sorry that happened to you.

Glad it wasn't me!!

Just kidding, its just not my turn yet!

And I agree, Demerol is way better than Vicodin!

You know that little man in your avatar well for some reason that is how I picture you. (not in the bunny suit)

Anyway, all that drawing needs is a little crutch leaning against his desk to complete my vision of you now.

Get better soon!!

Wish you well man. Looks like a pretty nasty break. I had a friend do a similar thing skiing - 3-months later he was a good as new!

It's too embarassing!

I just left the pits and hit the deep sand in the creek in second gear and my front end just augered in and tossed me over the bars. I landed feet first but my left ankle was turned sideways and it rolled and just snapped. Total run time of the bike including warm up = 2 minutes.

LOL, that's why I didn't tell what happened before! At least I was close to the truck and not in the back somewhere.

That sand is so deep I never even thought about breaking a bone there. I think his boot dug in about like his front wheel did! The problem was, his body was still moving forward. OUCH!!
