Default Father's Day Eve: Mudfest!

This evening was my first race back after breaking my leg in March. I asked myself at least twice, "What am I doing out here"! We have another new track about half an hour from my house and rbm33 has been after me to race the +35 class with him. I finally felt I was up to it after hitting Nocona last weekend with the North Texas ATM crew. We had a nice little thunderstorm blow through about 3:00 this afternoon and we figured the race would be cancelled. We were pleased to hear it was still on and loaded up after work and headed West down Highway 7. We were minus a photographer but I recruited rbm's daughter to snap a few pics. We came up with 7 pics total. I failed to tell her all she needed to know about the camera so it's my fault. Sorry.
All the clouds moved out about 7:00pm, just in time for practice. But talk about SLOP! The only time I've ever raced a track sloppier than this was at Oakhill last winter! Check out the first pic! We rolled everything, and I mean EVERYTHING during first practice. Some of the faster guys started jumping a few things during second practice, including rbm33. I stayed with the rolling thing.
We were race #5 and I was super pumped to hit the first turn in second place right behind rbm33. He checked out pretty quick and I had this RM250 dogging me the entire 5 laps! I was able to hold him off and finish in second place. Yes, I took his line away from him once or twice.
We started the same in moto two and I was pretty sure the RM250 was gonna jump most of the doubles since the track was in a little better shape by now. It was still pretty slick and I wasn't prepared to lay it all out just yet with this being my first race back. Sure enough, he passed me on the second lap by hitting a double that I backed out of. After that, I stayed right on his tail and checked his timing and speed thinking that I might just start jumping everything he did. However, I could see that he was pretty much riding at the very edge of his abilities so I decided to stay "comfortably" close and wait on his mistake. I made sure not to follow his line and was about to jump the second of two back to back doubles when I saw him get squirrely. He crashed. I went 2-2 for second place without having to jump that bigger double. Yes! I was totally spent at the end of the second moto from trying to stay on two wheels through all the slop. I never went down but had several close calls. Pulled a groin muscle.:
There were several crashes and and at least one broken bone. Wrist, I think.
The temperature was in the low70's and it was a GREAT way to say hello to Father's Day!

Sweet report, David!

Sounds like it was a challenge to stay upright in the trying mud conditions!

I really like pic number 4. Shows bit of the track layout

David:

Glad to see you back! Great report as always.

Just one tip about mud, get a can of Pam cooking spray & spray the bike, it keep some of the mud from sticking!

Nice write up David. Some how I thought you looked a little older and shorter than I remember.

Welcome back to the racing scene and nice job through the mud.
I happen to have chose to go to a local track today for Fathers day and get some practice as we will hit this track twice in the AMA D-37 SoCalif Summer MX Series. Besides I have a year old race with Char I will run this year at GMB and I need to practice.

LOL! Yeah, I reckon the gripper would lose it's grip.
Practice hard, Dane. I'll have the camera rolling when you take on the Blue Tornado!

Nice report!
Looks like a bloody mess for sure...still seat time is a GOOD time no matter how you slice it!
That Rekluse Honda looks super cool! Does rbm33 have 2 of them?
I noticed Clints bike on the trailer, did he race?

Congrats on a job well done, Jedi and RBM! Mud riding is fun! Cleaning up afterwards is not.

Great write up David and excellent job! Second place is awesome. I enjoyed the few pics that you had.

And Dane, you'd better get some practice in, because come August, I'll have the opportunity to practice as often as I can afford.

Or as often as you can stand. August in south Texas = HOT! Just drink, drink, drink.
