Default EVO Race 3 Palms 6-15-08

Hey this is my race report (pronounced reh'pour) on this past weekends race on the GP track out at 3P.

It started out with staying up late the night before to load the bikes, and leaving the next morning before the sun kissed the horizon. We got there and set up camp with my friend Aaron (he's a fellow Aggie from Friendswood). We had two tents, so we set one up just for the bikes... I know, we are so factory.

Anyways, on to the race. Practice was good, got a feel for the track. I was happy that there were no significant changes to the layout since the last time I had been there, since it has been awhile. The track was nice and smooth for practice, and well watered.

By the time my first moto in the Modern Open class came around more than half of the other classes had already had their way with the track. It was very dry/dusty and the braking bumps were starting to get pretty gnarly in a few areas. I was riding the C class but was gated with both B and A so I reserved myself to the farthest inside gate. My plan was to just inch around the inside of the turn and try to latch on the to guy in front of me. The first lap turned into a complete dust storm, and I decided not to clear the first two jumps I came to since I couldn't see the take off very well. Apparently I was the only one... and quickly fell to last place. I rode well the rest of the moto but could never quite catch back up to the pack (there were 6 C riders total out of about 25 gated riders). I ended up crossing the finish line in 5th feeling a bit defeated.

The second moto went a little better. One of the two A class guys I was gated with lined up next to me, and we joked about how he was going to block the entire field for me the entire race so I could get first place. When he disappeared into the dust about 15 seconds after the gate dropped I never saw him again I ran a good moto and started to work my way into the pack on my first couple of laps. I think I made it up to 3rd at one point, but I entered a turn to hot and overshot it. By the time I got back on the track I was once again in last. I held in there and finished strong in 4th place.

I was really surprised at how fast those C class guys were! I really learned what I need to work on out there. The hard packed/bumped out turns were killing me. That’s where I lost just about all of my time. I need to play with my suspension a bit and grab a new tire, but I really need to find the roughest track I can and just burn laps on it. I'm to spoiled with nice pretty groomed tracks. By the end of the second moto I was very relieved to see the checkered flag. The 104 degree heat (according to my truck's thermometer) and bumped out track beat me up.

Anyways, I was happy with the way I rode. My dad was there to watch and he said that was the fastest he has seen me ride to date. I was feeling good out there, and fell into my groove the second moto. I'm ready for more moto!

Since this thread is worthless without pics:

I know I saw a few others of the ATM crew out there, post up your pics/report too! I had hoped to get some pictures of Char out there, but right as I got into position with the camera she went down. Keep her in your thoughts/prayers as she recovers from her accident. You can read info on her condition here:

He is up in Colorado for the summer with his parents (they live up there). It sounds like he has been doing alot of riding lately, but has sat out the last week or so because of a cut he got in a crash. He says he will be back on the bike in a week or so.

Those are some sweet pics. It was extremely hot out there. I was whopped by the 3rd lap. Oh well I still won the overall series in the vintage am. class. I'm sure glad we're taking a break and I hope it cools down by the fall series start up. seeya soon
