Designed by Les with the help from the ladies Aux. They thought they had ordered too many , but sold out the 1st day by 10:00am. Armed with little more than and idea and a promise Les came back and put in motion what is today the California Mini Motorcycle Club’s (CMMC) annual Mini National. The non-profit club event draws riders from multiple states and Mexico each competing for over $45,000 in Prizes Les is the first to say it may have been his idea but the only reason it could be what it is today is that CMMC is an all volunteer organization devoted to the kids. Board members are there every other weekend and countless hours in between to give the kids a place to race. So, in keeping with the CMMC creed the Mini National is all about the kids. Each and every rider will leave Barona Oaks Mini National with a prize. As Les pointed out, “For all the work board members do their only payment is seeing the excitement on each of those kid’s faces as they leave the prize line.” Les Craig (former CMMC Board Member) sat on a hay bale in Florida at a national event talking about the family atmosphere at CMMC Events and how he would like to bring the excitement of a national motocross event to his extended CMMC family. A Scott goggle representative, Bevo Forte, sat on the hay bale next to Les and said, “Why don’t you put on your own national event. I will give goggles to each of the winners if you do.” CMMC was formed in 1973 and by the first Mini National in September of 1985 held at Barona Oaks. CMMC’s reputation of having many outstanding riders to compete with, a good fan base and its family atmosphere aided in the success of the first Mini National. The success was not the result of a great marketing strategy but simply a few of the mom and dad’s out working for the kids. Board members approached local businesses for prizes and once they told them CMMC was a non-profit group they were astounded at the generosity offered. Les went a step further and approached Yamaha hoping they might have a few spare parts they could donate. He was told they were not interested in modified classes but to his surprise they offered brand new Riva scooters to all the stock class winners if the winners would pay taxes and registration. Next Bell Helmets was contacted and before long two dozen helmets were on their way down. Soon after that Oakley, White Lightening clothing and the generosity of other manufacturers filled the prize bins. The event was intended for the CMMC kids that didn’t get to travel across country to nationals so originally to qualify riders had to ride five events prior to the Mini National. This didn’t stop it from becoming a national event though as by the second year racers were traveling from as far away as Washington state to qualify. When asked what Les thought of the Mini Nationals today he said, “The event is bigger than I ever envisioned it to be but I am not surprised because I know the board members work for free and do it from their heart for the fun and safety of the kids.” From all of the CMMC Family we wish you a safe and enjoyable Mini National and hope you can come back and race with us soon. |
