Default Bummer Ride Report: Nocona MX 10-08-06

A solid dozen riders headed out this morning well before daybreak for Nocona MX. ATM'ers were td28, jr5, Tony112, rbm33, jr., and crfjedi393. I absolutely LOVE being the first on the track. It was just light enough to see well and I made a slow sight lap. My next lap I stuck every single corner as far inside as I could get it and the new S-12 was HOOKIN' UP! I was feeling like Superman. I like coming back around and trying to stick that same line just to make it deeper in that soft Nocona dirt. I pulled off after 3 laps to chat a bit with everyone that was gearing up. The first thing I heard was that td28 had gone down hard. He endoed off the speed double in the middle of the track so I hustled out there and he was in serious pain. Back problem.

He made no bones about it. He wanted an ambulance. We left him in the middle of the track and just didn't let anybody ride for about the next 30-40 minutes until the ambulance had him gone. I followed them to the Nocona hospital and provided them with his CDL and Insurance card. A doctor arrived and we did a CT scan from his neck to his pelvis. This was early Sunday morning and not many staff were around. I even had to help them place him on the CT bed. When the copies started coming up even my untrained eye could see we had a problem. T-6 and T-7 vertebrae were fractured. The doc told me in no uncertain terms, "This is bad". He got on the phone to Wichita Falls and got a helicopter headed our way. His wife arrived at the Wichita Falls hospital the same time the chopper did. She will call me when they hear what the Neuro-surgeon says.
His name is Toby, he's 26 and has a very nice little family. You guys send some prayers and well wishes his way.
I went back to the track after the chopper left and rode a few laps with everyone else but my heart wasn't really in it. I finally made 4 or 5 straight laps at a decent speed and just loaded all our stuff up. I'll keep his bike and gear until we know what's going on. I'll post an address later if anyone wants to send a card or something. I know his wife would appreciate it immensely. Very sweet young lady and she's very scared right now.

Man, I hate to hear things like this. Too much of it going around. Prayers sent from South Texas.

Did he have any movement/feeling below the fractures?

He had feeling and could move all extremities. The new docs that walked in and saw the scans were quite shocked that he had movement everywhere. I'm optimistic.

Feeling in extremities is GOOD!!!! I am betting that he will be fine. Cross my finger and say a prayer for him.

Just so that I know, anyone see him crash or what the details are? An endo right there is pretty odd. There are several other places where an endo is possible, but not really there. Any info?

James

That is scarey, but good news that he has movement and sensation...keeping my fingers and toes crossed for it may just be a few months of low activity to let everything heal (kind of like when Robbie broke his neck) Toby and his family are in my prayers and when you get that address let us know..I will send cards and if he is going to be in the hospital for a while let us know I will send cards there too. I am a card person

Please keep us updated. i just hate when these things happen

Prayers from Ohio are on the way for Toby. Having survived a wreck that fractured 3 vertebrae I can offer hope and encouragement but most importantly prayers for his family who will have a challenge ahead to help him get healthy again. Thanks crfjedi393 for the report and keep us up to date.

Maybe the prayers are already paying off. I just got off the phone with Toby's wife and the docs in Wichita Falls don't think surgery is required. It sounds like they will confer a little more and make a final decision tomorrow morning but it's a good possiblility that he will go home fairly soon in a back brace. Maybe the docs in Nocona were just being very cautious. It looked really bad to me. Thanks for the prayers all! Keep it up!
