hey all. I found a great place to ride the central Florida area. If anyone is near or doesn't mind the drive to Zepherhills. It's right on SR54 just east of Zepherhills. Its called Rancho or El Rancho. I thought it was a well known place but almost everyone i talk to around me has never heard of it. It's a huge place lots of nice shaded trails and a lot of big open areas as well, and mud pits if thats your thing. The worst part is you will not find anything online about the place, if you don't know someone who knows about it you will never find it. If anyone would like to go sometime will be glad to give directions. I can try to post some pics I'm going this weekend. If i can figure out how to ppost them.:rockout

Anyone ever use No Toil oil on a K&N filter? The spray can of No Toil comes with a red spray tip for "cotton filters" but I'm not sure if No Toil will work with a K&N...

K&N wouldn't give me a definite answer (can't blame them I guess)...

I need a new air filter for my Timberwolf, and since it's quickly turning into a money pit, I'm trying to save where I can. The filter guide is rusted out and a new one is $30, the filter is another $15-$20...or I can run a K&N for $32 and ditch the filter guide.

I wouldn't run a K&N on my bike, but on the quad the air filter box inlet is so small and out of the way, I wouldn't mind running one with a prefilter.

Well, the title of this thread is one of the classes I'm in, ME 131 Manufacturing Process (mfg proc). Our final project for the class is to make a working C-Clamp. We were given 3 ways to make this clamp, we could Machine it on the mill and lathe, bend it, or we could cast it. If we chose the casting option then we would have to come up with our own design on the CAD program of our choice (NX5 or Inventor). So.. I love using Inventor and love to design something, and thought it would be nice to make something that I designed myself. So last night I sat down and came up with a C-Clamp design and got it ready to send to the Rapid-Prototyper.

If you don't know what a Rapid-Prototyper is.. they're amazing machines. You send the CAD design as a .STL file to the computer that's hooked up to the prototyper, then the computer will send over the info and it will make you a plastic model of your part! This is how you make the pattern for sand casting, so tonight I did the rapid-prototyping, and 2 hours later I have my pattern! And remember, the plastic used to make this pattern is VERY VERY expensive.. if i was doing this as a personal project and it wasn't a class assignment, i would be paying $7 per cubic inch. That adds up quick!

Since I'm sand casting i needed a 2 piece pattern with the parting line right down the middle, easy enough. and the outside edges with a taper so that the pattern comes out of the sand nice and easy without disturbing the sand. So right now I have my pattern now I just need to put the pattern in a Cope & Drag and pack them with sand that's been mixed with oil. Then put the cope and drag together after removing the pattern and pour in the melted aluminum (1400-1500 degrees). I'm hoping to be able to get the casting done the week after thanksgiving, too much to do this week to get the casting done before the break! So for now i'll post the pics for the process that went into it.

This class has been a very fun class, it really shows you how things are done and how much work has to be put forth to make a pattern for something like a piston or an engine case... For a mold to make a piston it costs about $25,000 (a reusable pattern) and for something like the right side case our bikes are about $75,000. Just goes to show how many of those parts they crank out to pay for the cost of these patterns.

Ah, one last thing before the pics. After speaking with my Ag-Hydraulics teacher, my major may be changing, but just slightly. Me and him were talking about Agricultural Engineering, and how BYU-Idaho used to have a Ag-Eng program, but they dropped it when they switched to a 4-year school. After talking about that.. I got looking at schools with the BS in Ag Eng, and only 2 schools that i would consider attending came up, University of Idaho in Moscow, ID and Iowa State University. So I may transfer to U of ID after a bit, the Ag-Eng degree and Mech Eng degrees are so similar, but the 2nd half of your Junior year and most of your Senior year in the Ag-Eng degree is focused on more Ag subjects (irrigation, drainage, tractors, GIS, hydraulics, heavy equipment, etc etc). This seemed to appeal to me much more than just a basic Mech Engineering degree, which is a very broad field, where at the Ag-Eng is much more specified and I would put the degree to use even when just operating the farm back home!

ok enough talk, here are the pics! Not sure if you can make it out in any of the pics, but along the side of the clamp it has an extrusion into the clamp 1/32" deep saying HYER FARMS on both sides. The family business of course :whistle
